On Wednesday October 18, an urgent meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) will be held to discuss the recent tragic events in the Gaza Strip. The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) issued the following statement on Saturday: “At the invitation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which chairs the Islamic Summit and the OIC Executive Committee, the Organization’s Executive Committee is convening an urgent open-ended extraordinary meeting at the ministerial level.”The purpose of the meeting is to discuss “the deteriorating security and stability situation in the region as well as the escalating military situation in Gaza and its environs.”
The OIC Executive Committee’s exceptional meeting will be held in the General Secretariat’s offices in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. An intense military attack against the Gaza Strip by Israeli forces last week in retaliation for a military offensive by the Palestinian group Hamas in Israeli territory marked a major escalation of Middle East tensions. When Hamas launched Operation Al-Aqsa Flood against Israel last Saturday, a multi-pronged surprise attack that included a bombardment of rocket launches and infiltrations into Israel via land, sea, and air, the fight got underway.
According to Hamas, the operation was carried out in retribution for the Israeli settlers’ increasing aggression against Palestinians as well as the invasion of the Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem. After that, Operation Swords of Iron was started by the Israeli military against Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip.Israel’s response included ordering approximately one million Gaza inhabitants to leave their homes in the north and move to the south, significantly exacerbating the living conditions in a region that has been under a crushing siege since 2007.
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian says the Iran will actively attend an urgent ministerial meeting planned by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to discuss the escalating situation in the Gaza Strip in Palestine.Amir-Abdollahian said on Sunday upon ending an official visit to Qatar that Iran had been invited to attend OIC’s meeting which is planned for Wednesday in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.“The Islamic Republic of Iran has been invited to the extraordinary meeting of the OIC and we will actively attend this session,” said the minister.
