The 30-year-old point guard’s move from the Brooklyn Nets to Mavs was confirmed on Monday after he failed to agree a new contract with the Nets last week after series of negotiations with the management of the Organization.
Kyrie Irving and Markieff Morris were traded for Spencer Dinwiddie and Dorian Finney-Smith.
“We feel that the talent and his abilities to make us better are something that we needed. Getting him is going to help put us in a position to win a championship. You look at his journey at other stops – he’s won where he’s gone.” coach Jason Kidd said
Irving won the NBA title with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016 and is an eight-time NBA All-Star, but he has endured off-court issues during three and a half years at the Nets.
Before the start of 2021-22 NBA season, Kyrie made a decision not to be vaccinated for Covid-19 which sees him missed 29 games for the Nets. Kyrie could not play any home games until March of the 2021-22 season because of New York’s ban on unvaccinated people in indoor venues.
“If I can work without being vaccinated, then all my brothers and sisters who are not vaccinated should be able to do the same, without being discriminated against, vilified or fired” Kyrie tweeted in September 2022
“Compulsory vaccination is one of the biggest violations of human rights in history” He added.
In November he posted a social media link to a film with anti-Semitic material in which he was suspended for five games.
“Where were you guys asking those same questions when I was a kid learning about the traumatic events of my familial history and what I’m proud to come from and proud to stand here,” Kyrie siad
“and why when I repeat myself that I’m not going to stand down, it has nothing to do with dismissing any other race or group people.” He continue.
The former Dallas Mavs player who is known as one the best Point Guards of all time in the NBA has something nice to say about the trade deal of Kyrie Irving.
“It’s easy to look at all the talk of the negative, but let’s look at the positive of what he’s done on and off the court. That’s the way we’re approaching it, He’s all about basketball. He wants to win and he wants to be coached, and this is a great opportunity for me to have someone like this to help.” ” said Jason Kidd.
Jason Kidd said the pairing of Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic, who is injured currently with a heel injury, can make a difference for the Mavs who are currently fifth in the Western Conference with a 29-26 record after a 124-111 win over Utah Jazz at the Vivivt Smart Home Arena in the early hours of Tuesday.
Kyrie Irving was linked with the LA Clippers, LA Lakers and Phoenix Suns before a deal was eventually agreed with the Mavs on Monday.
The All-Star will practice with his new teammates today as he prepare to play his debut game against Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday in Los Angeles without Luka Doncic.
