On Friday, 15th Octocber, 2021 a terrible accident happened at Kumasi Central Market. The victim Ahmed Tijani sustained burns on his hands, thighs and genitals due to the acid he mistakenly used in place of water to clean himself in accordance with the Islamic tradition.

Thomas Adjei an eye witness explained that in the morning just before midday the victim by name Ahmed Tijani set out to get an item but passed by the urinal. The victim got there and as a Muslim he has to use water to clean himself after visiting the urinal. There were two ablution kettles at the entrance of the urinal and he took one with the thinking that it had water inside it. After he finished urinating he unknowingly poured the acid on his genitals.  He screamed immediately and we rushed into the urinal and saw him in severe pains with acid burns on parts of his body. We rushed him to a nearby clinic in the market were the medical officer directed us to take him to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).  I personally made a report to the Zongo Police Station where I was given forms to present to the hospital. Four persons who are caretakers of the public toilet have been picked up by police to assist with investigations with the ablution can retrieved by the police to be used as an exhibit.

Another eyewitness who spoke under anonymity reported that the terrible accident that occurred has made him unhappy upon seeing the victim’s condition but as Muslims we have to accept it. He prayed that Allah continues to protect us all. The situation was severe so he pleaded with the workers at the central market to please make sure if there are harmful substances around them they should keep them safe to avoid any other accident in future.
