Heavy gunfire has been heard in the capital of Guinea-Bissau near the seat of the government where President Umaro Sissoco Embalo and Prime Minister were believed to have gone to attend a cabinet meeting, according to media reports.
Heavily-armed men surrounded the Palace of Government, where President Umaro Sissoco Embalo and Prime Minister Nuno Gomes Nabiam were believed to have gone to attend a cabinet meeting.
But the president later told AFP in a brief telephone call, “All is well” and added that the situation is “under control”.
Umaro Cissoko Embaló said the situation was under control, calling it a “failed attack against democracy”.
The cabinet announced the President would address the nation from the seat of government on Tuesday evening and invited reporters to attend the speech there.
According to various accounts, in the early afternoon armed men were seen entering the government palace which houses different ministries.
