OPINION: Let’s be moderate on Isaac Oppong for now
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

It’s a bit too early to heap praises and hoist accolades on 18-year-old Isaac Oppong of Asante Kotoko with only three games played so far in a marathon season of 34 games. So much there is to play for, equally so much there’s to be proven by “Sunyani Neymar” to be tagged as the best.

Clearly a much better prospect than Matthew Anim Cudjoe, in my opinion, based on what he’s done thus far for Asante Kotoko as juxtaposed what Anim Cudjoe did during his short stay.

However, it will be detrimental and suicidal to all the ranks and file of the club to start pouring accolades on the young lad in their quest to breaking the seven-years jinx of Premier League anger now that he’s giving glimpses of being a key addition Asante Kotoko will be doing with along the season.

Asante Kotoko will need to get a consistent and much better outings from Isaac Oppong in subsequent games to place a better chance of outwitting rivals and defending champions Hearts of Oak off the title. That said, in the three games played, he has been consistent and been the best player for Asante Kotoko.

It takes a dint of hard work to spot a talent of a kind down the lower tiers of Ghanaian football to be a shining star in the topflight league. Some tireless job was done by Asante Kotoko in unearthing Isaac Oppong from nowhere.

Going forward, I’m sure Asante Kotoko will not rest on the shoulders of a youngster who has not tasted football at the top echelons before if they really want to double up their chances of conquering the season’s diadem. If so, it will chock them during the thick period of the season where injuries and fatigues will set in and experience and mental toughness will be needed to prevail which Isaac Oppong has not proven to have those yet.

The stars are shining on Asante Kotoko with an excellent start to the 2021/22 season amassing 9 out of 9 points in three games with Isaac Oppong giving out 2 goals and 2 assists in Kotoko’s six goals scored so far. That looks good for the club and the youngster but the journey is far fetched to start the praise singing. Works that need to be done are much more than what’s already done.

Let’s be moderate for now.
