Menstruation, A reason to skip class

Menstruation is the monthly flow of blood in a female. A female gets her menses at least five to seven days in a month. Hmmm the big question here is, is there a reason to skip to class. Some part of Ghana denies the girl child access to school which is the causes of absenteeism in schools. In the northern part of Ghana most of these girls do not get access to sanitary pads and menstrual hygiene kits which is a major problem in some   part of the country

Ghana is a leading country in Africa but continues to struggle with poverty. Period poverty in Ghana is a prevailing issue, especially in rural areas. One study in the Zabzugu and North Dayi districts found that 95% of girls in the region missed school due to menstruation. The causes of period poverty vary .Also no girl crosses the old river offin when she is menstruating which is hindering girl child education.

The causes of period poverty vary. However, the key factors are affordability, lack of education on periods and a dearth of access to menstrual materials. Grassroots and international organizations have stepped in to help solve these issues. An end to period poverty in Ghana is achievable through various strategies

Period poverty is the lack of access to sanitary products due to financial constraints, this can be caused by a wide range of life events that negatively impact on a girl or woman’s ability to access sanitary products to manage a most intimate and regular occurrence in her life

The menstruation taboo extends to many parts of a woman’s physiology and sexuality, But it primarily involves the stigma around discussing and caring for menstrual needs. This taboo often leads to the exclusion of women from social, domestic, and educational activities..

Cultural norms and religious taboos on menstruation are often compounded by traditional associations with evil spirits, shame and embarrassment surrounding sexual reproduction. In some cultures, women bury their cloths used during menstruation to prevent them being used by evil spirits.Girls are denied access to school during this period
