American star Serena Williams has taken to social media to announce her withdrawal from the upcoming US Open due to a torn hamstring.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion hasn’t played since retiring from her first round match at Wimbledon two months ago after suffering an ankle injury.
Williams, who is currently one Grand Slam behind the record-holder Margaret Court, will now have to wait until the Australian Open in 2022 for her next opportunity to equal the record.
“After careful consideration and following the advice of my doctors and medical team, I have decided to withdraw from the US Open to allow my body to heal completely from a torn hamstring,” Serena Williams announced on Instagram.
“New York is one of the most exciting cities in the world and one of my favourite places to play.
“I will miss seeing the fans but will be cheering everyone on from afar. Thank you for your continued support and love. I’ll see you soon.”
The 39-year-old hasn’t won a Major title since the Australian Open in 2017, having failed to win a set in her last four Grand Slam finals.
